Big Red’s beginnings can be traced back to the hockey playing days of Matt & Jon.  While playing hockey all over North America, a viable late night cheesesteak option was nowhere to be found outside of the Philadelphia/South Jersey area. 

After moving to Wisconsin in 2005, Matt had joked about starting a cheesesteak shop in Madison.  In July 2006, Kurt moved out to Wisconsin, and the idea was brought up again, a business plan was written, and by the end of August 2006, the Big Red’s Trailer was purchased and began operations on October 6, 2006.

Kurt and Matt braved three harsh Wisconsin winters selling cheesesteaks out of the trailer.  After developing a sizeable , loyal following over three years of trailer operations, Big Red’s opened its shop at 610 University on November 6, 2009. 

Since opening our doors last winter, we have enjoyed an outstanding year and we couldn’t be happier serving our loyal customers a little taste of heaven from back home. We thank everyone for their continued support and we look forward to seeing everyone again soon!
